We dream a Durham together with opportunities

We Dream a Durham Together with Opportunities is a community poem created in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Day 2024, compiled from the dreams of nearly 100 community members ranging in age from 5-(reportedly) 100, from kindergarten & middle school students to elected officials.

I dream a Durham together with opportunities.

I dream a Durham where we are together.

I dream of a community that can give you opportunity,

I dream a Durham with more education - a place with saturation of knowledge,

where education is for everyone.

We always have something to learn so let’s make a change to our filter.

I dream of a Durham where all of our children go to school together in our traditional public schools,

where more public schools are opened, and

there is  more funding for teachers so that we can get our tools for school.

where there is more respect for Durham Public Schools for helping us achieve what we thought we couldn't accomplish,

Where all parents take an active role in their children’s education,

all youth get a meaningful civic education, and

everyone is knowledgeable of the resources and opportunities available in their community

I dream a  Durham where there is NO VIOLENCE.

I dream it again and again and again, a Durham free from violence and guns.

Where playing outside isn’t scary,

where you can’t find gun violence nowhere,

where nobody is killing, robbing, school shooting, or drug dealing,

where I don't have to worry if it was a gunshot or a firework.

where I don't go to school worried if I will make it home or not.

A Durham where where the school security can not be out done.

I dream a Durham where we have safer neighborhoods so kids can roam around,

where people can walk outside and not have to worry about getting shot,

where parents take comfort in seeing their children’s smiling faces while they play outdoors - in every neighborhood.

I dream of a Durham with no crime to keep the world divine,

where after a long walk we can sit down and relax.

I want to hear the sound of kids sliding down slides at the parks we should have.

I dream of a Durham who is peaceful,

where hatefulness is no more and where peace can roar

I dream of a Durham where more community parks are everywhere and you can see people playing anywhere.

A Durham where parents feel safe downtown, taking their kids out for ice cream and going to a sporting event A

Durham where so many people can come and have fun.

I dream of a Durham where buying food isn’t t a struggle,  wondering if you are going to eat,

With more convenient stores where people can buy food and many things they want,

Where there are water parks, free pet shops with donations,

where there are more affordable toys,

a Lamborghini shop so people can buy cool cars.

I dream of diverse events like parades so everyone will get their praise.

I dream a Durham where giant murals cover the walls and people look around & stare at them in awe.

Maybe a museum or 2 that have people who remind you of you

I dream of a Durham where doctors are free for all, which means no cost at all.

A Durham with opportunities for jobs so kids can support their peeps,

where gas prices are more affordable and teachers are paid more,

where people don’t have to worry about the next time they are going to eat, or get heat in the winter months.

We need food to survive, with the money rising people can’t afford it, and cant thrive.

People go through a hard time the way it is, why make others feel like this? : I dream Durham had a better economy

I dream of a Durham where the term “homeless” is no more,

where you can’t see a homeless person on the street,

where homes can be for EVERYBODY.

A Durham where people with no homes could roam around free and have a place to pee and sleep, and affordable housing is projected and respected.

I dream of a Durham where there’s less trash on the ground, and clean air all around,

where trash is picked up and put in the garbage,

where trash on the streets is no more.

A Durham where you can see a clean, green environment everywhere,

and kids can lay in fresh green galore.

I dream of a Durham where humans and nature are one,

where we try to fix this planet, before the year is done.

Where trees grow and farmers sow. and

we can see the beauty of Durham.

Durham where there is NO BULLYING OR  JUDGING OTHERS

me gustaria que fuera menos toxico y que haya mas comida saludable y los perros y gatos tengan un hogar.

I dream of a Durham where we won’t we be judged off of our skin color,

where there are nicer people, people that aren't hurting others,

I dream of a Durham where there is less hurting and pain,

more happiness and joy

I dream of diversity, equity, and equality for all children and families

I dream of a Durham where all families, regardless of race creed or national origin feel cherished and supported

A free Durham FOR ALL,

full of kindness, unity, and without racism,

where everybody can have a dream (not just people who have money to make it succeed),

where people don’t have to beg on the side of the road,

with more active community,

where people can talk to people of different races or different religious beliefs,

where youth voice is value and volumized.

I dream of a Durham where there is less hate towards people who have a disadvantage in learning, or their everyday lifestyle

Children play and people say: ‘Everyone is Welcome here’..’

I dream of a Durham where it is safe and loving for everyone.

I dream of a Durham where you wouldn't have to worry a bit, no matter where your at.

I dream of a Durham where we are one unity and freedom, where we have fun.

I dream of a Durham where  I am at peace

We dream of a community that can give you opportunity

We dream a Durham where we are together.

We dream a Durham together with opportunities.

Maybe, just maybe, it doesn't have to be a dream, it can be a reality.
