DURHAM CITY GOVERNMENT

The City of Durham has a Council-Manager Government, which means that City Council hires a County Manager to run the city.

Every two years, Durham voters elect the Mayor and three of the six City Council members. These elections are non-partisan: none of the candidates run for office as Republican, Democrat, or with any party.

In each election, voters can vote for one candidate for Mayor and three candidates for city council.

 What Does City Government Do?

What did you do this morning? If you brushed your teeth, took a shower, cooked breakfast, took out the garbage, went to school, or played in a park, Durham City Government was affecting you every step of the way. It provides water and other utilities, maintains the roads, picks up garbage, and builds parks and recreation areas. As you go through your day, look for ways that City Government impacts your life—it probably makes more of a difference than you think!
